On health versus wealth

I place a lot of importance on health in my life, yet if I were to rate my fitness levels on a scale of 1 to 10, I would give myself a 2. My health problems are several; accidents, related ailments and several medical procedures have diminished my resilience. But I am happy with my 2 out of 10. The human body is the most remarkable piece of machinery in the universe. We only realise its value when we start losing parts of it. I have on several occasions, and know how it feels. Once lost, it never all comes back, but you can manage. I am happy because I am in a 'can manage' situation. It could have been worse for me.

With advancing age, many aspects of our daily life need careful and considered monitoring. The body systems fail and need constant care and protection. The slide is inevitable, but maybe, with some effort, it could be slowed down and the ride made more comfortable.

The age-old argument of health versus wealth is a no-brainer. One must undoubtedly choose health. If you are healthy, happiness can be achieved.

On the other hand, if you are happy, it is not necessary that you would be healthy. In fact, it could be the cause for future unhappiness. Happiness is a state of mind, health is not so abstract. It's the state of your body—a more physical aspect.

On fitness fanaticism

I work out under a trainer in the gym every morning and have a controlled diet with essential protein and vitamin supplements. Yes, I go to the gym early seven days a week and even on days when I've called it a night a little late the day before and have had less sleep. But on such days, I compensate. My workout is less vigorous if there has been less sleep. Also, I catch up on it by taking a nap in the afternoon.

I depend upon guidance from my fitness trainer. With age, many considerations are taken into account. For example, the heart rate and stress limitations when you are doing cardio. The amount of weight you push also changes, for you must keep in mind that building muscles at the age of 65 is a long and tough procedure.

Sometimes, it's more important to just maintain rather than build. And a little yoga to keep the body breathing well and supple.
