Maintenance & Welfare of Parents & Senior Citizens Act, 2007 (Act 56)



Maintenance & Welfare of Parents & Senior Citizens Act, 2007 (Act 56) has been passed by Parliament and has been made law. It will have far reaching effects on Senior Citizens of India.

This Act includes the following aspects :-
Senior Citizens can claim maintenance from children/grand children.
Tribunal shall decide such claims expeditiously.
Property of Senior Citizens shall be protected from forcible transfer.
A Geriatric Ward shall be provided in every District Level Hospital.
An Age Old Home shall be available in each District. Abandoning a Senior Citizen shall be punishable with imprisonment of 3 months or fine up to Rs 5000 or both. Many States have legislated similar Acts and established Tribunals. Some States have yet to act. Maharashtra has notified Rules on 23-6-10 and has nominated tribunals also.
